.CM vs .CO – Which Will Make You More Money?

The early results are in for the new ccTLD .CM (Cameroon) auctions and from the looks of it, it’s been very successful. The Domains posted first day cleared $500,000 at NameJet.com. Here are some of the results.

hotels.cm $81,100
sex.cm $51,300
taobao.cm $35,100
mail.cm $30,100

Colombia

On Aug. 20, 2009 it became official, Colombia awarded .CO ccTLD Domain Registry to .CO Internet S.A.S. The global launch of second-level registrations (xyz.co) is expected to happen during the first quarter of 2010 during a comprehensive Sunrise process designed to protect trademark interests. NeuStar will serve as the registry operator. The good news for domainers is, you don’t need to be a Colombian or live in Colombia to register the .CO ccTLD, they intend to open the game to domain investors all over the world. The word on the street is they will have a sunrise period and then will open the registrations to everyone. If there is more than one person looking to register the same domain, that domain will go for auction. The rumored pricing is, third level domains are expected to be on the range of the $10 USD and the second level domains around the $20 to $30 (this may change once they have all the marketing and the research done).

So if .CM domains fetched such a premium price, then what will the new upcoming .CO extension command?

What made .CM so attractive to the domain investor is typo traffic. The question is, will the .CO be more sought after? Are users more likely to make the .CO typo rather than .CM? I myself have noticed over the years that I have typed in error .CO rather than .CM. Sticky keyboard, fast typing or simply not typing the M was the cause. You also need to consider that .CO works better for general use, companies, corporations and even Geo Colorado. The .CM investment will still bring in a nice revenue stream from misdirected traffic. But how much more traffic will the .CO command? Which do you choose?

You can follow .CO to get the latest updates on twitter. http://twitter.com/puntoco

There’s a big difference here. .CO has potential WAY beyond “typo” traffic.

plus yo have to take acount that the market on Colombia is bigger than the one in Cameroon … so imho the .CO is one of the best ccTLD to invest, and not onely for typos :)

@elnono Thanks for pointing that out.

@Eric How much “potential WAY beyond” is it? Will it out due some of TLDs?
